Dr. Sharara provides treatment for recurrent pregnancy loss
Experiencing multiple miscarriages can be devastating, but there is hope. Our Virginia fertility center has helped many patients with recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL). According to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), RPL is when a woman has suffered two or more miscarriages. It is estimated to affect about 1% of women.
The treatment options for recurrent pregnancy loss
Treatment plans at our Virginia fertility center are based on thorough testing. Identifying the exact cause of multiple miscarriages allows Fady Sharara MD to develop the most effective treatment plan. Women may experience multiple miscarriages due to several issues.
- Physical causes. Some women have congenital malformations of the uterus, such as a uterine septum, an extra piece of tissue that partially divides the uterus. Other women have uterine fibroids or scar tissue that impair fetal development in the uterus. Surgery to remove the obstructive tissue can promote future pregnancy success.
- Genetic causes. Many miscarriages are the result of chromosomal abnormalities. Parents may be unknowing carriers of genetic illnesses, or the mother’s egg quality may have deteriorated. Preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) with IVF, or the use of donor eggs or donor sperm can help avoid miscarriages caused by chromosomal issues.
- Underlying medical causes. Women with diabetes, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and autoimmune disorders can all experience higher rates of miscarriage. Proper management of these underlying conditions can help promote pregnancy success.
Unfortunately, not every instance of multiple miscarriages has a clear-cut underlying cause. This doesn’t mean we can’t help patients with unexplained recurrent pregnancy loss. With years of experience in fertility treatment, we can still tailor a fertility plan to give these patients the best chance of success.
