A Coordinated, Safe & Compassionate Journey

At the Virginia Center for Reproductive Medicine (VCRM), we guide donors and intended parents through every phase of third-party reproduction with individualized medical precision.

Donor eggs provide an extraordinary pathway to parenthood when using one’s own eggs is not clinically possible or is unlikely to lead to a healthy pregnancy. At our Reston fertility clinic, the donation process typically spans two to three months from initial application to retrieval. Every medical cost is covered by intended parents, and donors receive competitive financial compensation for their generosity, time, and commitment.

“To protect donor health and maximize embryonic viability, every donor matches strict medical guidelines and completes multi-phase physical, genetic, and psychological screenings prior to matching.” — Dr. Fady Sharara, Medical Director & Founder

The 6 Steps of the Egg Donation Process

Here is how egg donation works from application through successful embryo transfer:

1

Initial Online Donor Application

Prospective donors submit an initial confidential application verifying essential criteria: age 21–31, non-smoking status, regular menstrual cycles, healthy BMI (21–27), and no significant genetic history.

2

Comprehensive Health & Personal Questionnaire

Qualified applicants receive an in-depth medical history questionnaire covering three generations of family health, educational accomplishments, physical traits, lifestyle habits, and personal motivations.

3

Clinical Evaluations & Genetic Screening

Our clinical team coordinates a comprehensive physical exam, transvaginal pelvic ultrasound, ovarian reserve blood testing (AMH), infectious disease panel, multi-gene carrier screening, and a consultation with a reproductive psychologist.

4

Anonymous Donor Selection & Matching

Hopeful parents view non-identifying donor profiles (including childhood photos, hobbies, academic background, and health metrics) to select the donor who feels like the perfect match for their growing family.

5

Cycle Synchronization & Ovarian Stimulation

For fresh cycles, birth control medications synchronize the recipient's and donor's menstrual cycles. The donor begins 10–12 days of daily self-administered hormone injections to mature multiple eggs, monitored closely via gentle ultrasound visits.

6

Ultrasound-Guided Retrieval & Fertilization

When eggs reach optimal maturity, a 15–20 minute outpatient retrieval is performed under gentle IV sedation. Eggs are immediately fertilized with sperm via ICSI in our IVF laboratory, cultured to the blastocyst stage, genetically screened (PGT-A), and transferred to the hopeful mother or surrogate.
